ASL 2003 medal awarded to Dr Max Finlayson

The Australian Society for Limnology Medal Committee has awarded the 2003 Medal to Dr Max Finlayson for a world-wide promotion of Australian limnology and wetland management; an impressive contribution to limnological scientific research; and excellence in education and communication. The Medal was presented to Dr Finlayson by Associate Professor Andrew Boulton at the 42nd annual ASL conference held in Warrnambool 1-5 December 2003. More information and nomination details.

Award for Outstanding Ornithological Student in 2003

MariaGrazia Bellio, who works in the Ecological Risk Assessment program of the Supervising Scientist Division, has been awarded the Bill Lane Award for Outstanding Ornithological Student in 2003.

Senate Inquiry into Environmental Regulation of Uranium Mining

The Senate referred the above matter to the Committee for inquiry and report. The terms of reference were:

The regulatory, monitoring, and reporting regimes that govern environmental performance at the Ranger and Jabiluka uranium operations in the Northern Territory and the Beverley and Honeymoon in situ leach operations in South Australia, with particular reference to:

  1. the adequacy, effectiveness and performance of existing monitoring and reporting regimes and regulations;
  2. the adequacy and effectiveness of those Commonwealth agencies responsible for the oversight and implementation of these regimes; and
  3. a review of Commonwealth responsibilities and mechanisms to realise improved environmental performance and transparency of reporting.

The Committee tabled its Report on 14 October 2003.
