Preliminary analysis of sediments collected from billabongs of the Magela Creek system has indicated widespread variations in sediment types and trace metal concentrations. The poor reproducibility found for trace metal levels in total sediment samples was largely overcome by analysis of the <20 µm fraction obtained by sieving to remove sand particles and organic detritus. Trace metal analysis of the <20 µm sediment fraction showed acceptable reproducibility of results and enabled the trace metal levels in sediments from different billabongs to be compared.
The results indicate that this sediment fraction will be most useful for monitoring potential accumulation of trace metals in the Magela Creek system.
