About this document

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used in many environmental spatial analysis and modelling situations. Technical and applications-oriented workers from many fields (e.g. geography, ecology, geology, hydrology, etc.) are interested in the use of GIS and as a result published material is spread across the literature of many disciplines. There is only one GIS-specific journal (International Journal for Geographic Information Systems) and many papers are in the form of conference proceedings. Consequently, it is often difficult to identify and locate bibliographic information on specific aspects of GIS.

This bibliography has been compiled as part of a collaborative research agreement between the Northern Territory University and the Supervising Scientist for the Alligator Rivers Region. It contains over 2000 references to GIS literature which have been selected from books, journals and conference proceedings published from 1987 to the present. 'Me selection is biased to environmental and resource management topics (cf. urban, sociological and facilities management) and specifically aims to provide a reference point for GIS literature related to environmental risk/hazard assessment associated with activities such as mining. References are in alphabetical order by author and the following sources account for the majority:

AARNET users can access the bibliography in text format via anonymous ftp from darwinntu.edu.au. The data can be provided in other formats or alternative means on request (phone 089 466 711, fax 089 410 460 or email chris@ironwoodmtu.edu.au). While compiling this information other bibliographic efforts have been identified. Currently, the most Significant of these is that of the National Centre for Geographical Information and Analysis (NCGIA) who have prepared a comprehensive bibliography for 1991 GIS publications and are presently compiling 1992 information.
