Environmental Research and Supervision of Uranium Mining
The Supervising Scientist is responsible for the environmental oversight of uranium mining activities in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia. This region includes Kakadu National Park which is recognised internationally for its outstanding natural and cultural values by inscription on the World Heritage List.
The Supervising Scientist undertakes a comprehensive program of environmental research to identify any actual or potential impacts of uranium mining, to determine how impacts may be avoided or minimised, and to develop techniques by which environmental impacts can be accurately measured.
The outcomes of the research program inform the supervisory activities of the Supervising Scientist which include involvement in the regulatory processes of the Northern Territory Government, and the direct review of the environmental performance of uranium mines in the region.
