MEPS for three phase electric motors
Since 2001, all three-phase electric motors from 0.73 kW to 185 kW have been required to meet Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). MEPS will remove from the market products deemed to be unacceptable because of their low energy efficiency.
All motors licensed for sale in Australia which are in the MEPS size range have to be registered on a national database. The data is validated though targeted testing by accredited laboratories, and significant penalties apply for suppliers providing false or misleading information.
The MEPS motor database is available at www.energyrating.gov.au.
Energy efficiency
Improving energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, both in Australia and around the world.
Energy efficiency improvements can deliver economic, social and environmental benefits. Improved end-use energy efficiency, in business and the general community, protects jobs, contributes to the competitiveness of industry and promotes Australia's economic prosperity.
The Australian Greenhouse Office's Equipment Energy Efficiency team is working to improve energy efficiency in the areas of appliances, equipment and buildings through codes and standards, partnerships and the provision of information.
In a joint initiative with State and Territory Governments, and New Zealand, the Australian Greenhouse Office is encouraging the manufacture and purchase of energy efficient household appliances and commercial and industrial equipment.
