Western Australia TravelSmart Households
GREENHOUSE GAS ABATEMENT PROGRAM PROJECT
Project Management: Western Australian Government
Project Details:
- The Western Australian Government applied a Household based travel information and motivation service over three years to 218,500 persons in the Perth metropolitan area.
- The programme was based upon a proven approach that has been trialed in a range of socio-geographic situations. The programme aimed to reduce private vehicle use by encouraging smart use of the car and transfer of trips to walking, cycling and public transport.
- Initial contact with households was made through letter and phone call. Tailored information packages were delivered to each household expressing interest in making changes in their travel habits.
- In addition, some persons received individual follow-up sessions designed to strengthen behaviour change outcomes.
- Achievement of greenhouse gas abatement is expected through a 12-16 per cent reduction in vehicle kilometres travelled across the target population.
- The programme will be delivered in four phases scheduled in the temperate Spring and Autumn seasons of 2006 and 2007. Measurement of the vehicle use (vkt) reduction will be achieved by random sample and panel travel diary surveys across the target population and control groups.
GGAP Funding: $3 million was approved under the GGAP.
Total Project Cost: Approximately $8.8 million.
Environmental achievements:
-
Expected Greenhouse Gas Abatement:
Up to 0.371 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over the period 2008-2012 - There are also socio-economic benefits including: health outcomes (from physical activity); reduced household financial stress; reduced congestion; improved air quality and efficient public transport loadings.
Note: Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) is the basis for comparing the warming effect of a greenhouse gas as compared to carbon dioxide and is calculated by multiplying the mass of a greenhouse gas by its global warming potential.
