About us
The Hon Tony Burke MP was appointed as Australia's first Minister for a Sustainable Population to help guide the development of policies to meet Australia's future population needs.
A Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia
On Friday 13 May 2011, Minister Burke released Sustainable Australia - Sustainable Communities, A Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia.
The strategy will help to ensure that future population change is compatible with the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of Australia.
Activities
In working towards the strategy the government developed and released an issues paper: A Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia. The issues paper is accompanied by three appendices, the independent advisory panel reports and was released on the 16 December 2010.
The issues paper and the advisory panel reports were developed to support a public consultation process. 380 submissions were received, reflecting a wide variety of views. The views and ideas received through this process were considered in the development of a Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia.
Sustainable Population Strategy Taskforce
The Sustainable Population Strategy Taskforce was established in May 2010 to support the development of the strategy and the issues paper, to support the public consultation process and to provide secretariat support to the three advisory panels.
