About the Suburban Jobs Program
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities is responsible for the management of the $45 million Suburban Jobs Program. The Suburban Jobs Program was announced as a measure under the Sustainable Australia - Sustainable Communities Strategy in the 2011-12 Budget.
The objective of the Suburban Jobs Program is to assist state and local governments to plan for and provide enduring employment opportunities in the growing outer suburbs of our major capital cities. Well planned and delivered local employment opportunities will assist communities to be more sustainable in the long term by improving the outputs of the local economy, fostering a sense of place and pride for local residents, and reducing commuting time thereby allowing people more time to connect with friends and family.
Suburban Jobs Program funding will contribute to a small number of substantial proposals led by local governments or state authorities or state business enterprises that integrate the delivery of public good infrastructure with other outcomes in areas such as planning, research, community engagement, communications, data collection and/or the demonstration of the opportunities presented by the digital economy.
Projects will be selected through a competitive merit-based funding round.
The Suburban Jobs Program commenced in 2011-12 and will conclude in 2014-15.
Next steps
The application period will remain open until Friday 17 February 2012. Applications will then be assessed against the eligibility and selection criteria outlined in the Program guidelines, after which recommendations for funding will be made to the Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.
