The Australian Government Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities commissioned Sustainable Resource Use to compile Australian waste definitions for each jurisdiction. The report is a compilation of waste definitions compiled from the legislation, regulations, subordinate instruments, policy, and strategy documents for each jurisdiction.
This report will assist in clarifying the different definitions used across the jurisdictions and aid the development of an approach to harmonising definitions and reporting.
This study was commissioned to support work under the National Waste Policy: Less Waste, More Resources, specifically Strategy 4 (introducing a national definition and classification system for wastes), Strategy 5 (developing a suite of national principles, specifications, and best practice guidelines etc) and Strategy 16 (a national system of data reporting).
The report also includes a summary table listing some key or absent definitions related to waste and resource recovery by jurisdiction. It also highlights some of the different waste classifications used in jurisdictions for different purposes.
