Managing wetlands

In Australia, primary responsibility for managing wetlands and their associated flora and fauna, is vested in the Australian, state and territory governments. The Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts is the administrative authority within Australia for the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.

Since 2001, the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council (NRMMC) has considered broad natural resource management issues, including wetlands, in Australia and New Zealand.

The Wetlands and Waterbirds Taskforce operates under the NRMMC. The Wetlands and Waterbirds Taskforce is responsible for advising the NRMMC Standing Committee on the implementation of the Ramsar Convention. The Taskforce consists of wetlands experts from the relevant Australian and New Zealand, state and territory agencies. State and territory Wetlands and Waterbirds Taskforce representatives have led the way in implementing strategies promoting the conservation, repair and ecologically sustainable use of wetlands.
