Under the Murray-Darling Basin Initiative, the Australian, New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory governments and the Murray-Darling Basin's communities, are working together to develop and implement long-term, coordinated responses to environmental and economic threats. Policies and strategic on-ground approaches are being developed through the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council, the Murray-Darling Basin Commission and the Community Advisory Committee.

The Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts supports the Australian Government Ministers, Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners in their role on the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council and Commission. It also provides representation on a number of Commission committees to develop and progress strategic approaches to natural resource management. Some of the more significant issues are the:
