About the project
The project will examine the impacts on the Shire's urban water supplies and irrigated agriculture as a result of changed water availability and reliability. The results will be analysed and strategies proposed to empower the community to ensure the Shire remains vibrant and productive. The Council will:
- implement metering of river water to households;
- investigate urban water supply pricing;
- develop a more appropriate water restriction regime;
- identify funding opportunities and other resources for public education to promote domestic and industrial water efficiency;
- undertake a study to recommend strategies to achieve water savings on parks, sporting grounds and other open spaces controlled by Council;
- undertake a review of all urban water supply areas and make recommendations on strategies to be able to accommodate future growth; and
- investigate effective water strategies for the up to 500 ML per year of waste water generated by the St George Sewerage Treatment Plant.
Project benefits
The project will deliver strategies to allow the Balonne Shire to prosper while responding to climate change and the changing environmental management practices within the Murray-Darling Basin.
