About the project
The project aims to secure water access for sporting reserves within Hindmarsh Shire by:
- undertaking a planning study to determine the status of existing water management arrangements; and
- investigating better water solutions for reliable yield and cost effectiveness.
Project benefits
Many of the natural playing surfaces in the Hindmarsh Shire are reliant on mains water supplies, meaning surfaces are often unavailable or damaged during times of restricted water availability. This project will look at ways to supply water to these surfaces through water saving measures or alternative water supplies. These measures will promote better community wellbeing and functionality by increasing access to sporting facilities and ensuring greater water availability for other critical uses.
Project completion
The project was completed in June 2010. A comprehensive report outlining strategies to secure water access for the main sporting reserves at Rainbow, Jeparit, Nhill and Dimboola has been produced. The report identified existing usage, irrigation infrastructure and current ground conditions in addition to future options for water resources.
The report acknowledges reduced water availability through climate change and identified efficient and cost effective alternatives to ensure sporting reserves are available for future long-term use.
