Living with less water adaptation strategies for the new dryland
Loddon Shire Council
Funding: $600,000
About the project
The Loddon Shire Council is the lead Recipient for a consortium of Councils covering the regions of Loddon, Campaspe and Gannawarra.
This project will develop a strategic transition implementation plan in response to community objectives to match land-use to land capability, to achieve positive agricultural and environmental outcomes, to assist agricultural producers and to help communities adapt to reduced water availability. The project will identify landholder land-use and management options for the new dryland to ensure good land-use transition decisions based on quality information and local knowledge.
Project benefits
Driven by local government, the consortium will work to deliver the following objectives:
- determine the extent of dependency of local communities and industries on current water availability in order to identify sustainability risks;
- build on identified management actions to achieve viable and sustainable outcomes for local communities and industries;
- ensure good land-use transition decisions based on quality information and local knowledge;
- match land-use to land capability;
- achieve positive agricultural and environmental outcomes;
- assist agricultural producers and communities to adapt to reduced water availability; and
- develop a regional implementation plan to support farmers and land owners to strategically transition to 'new dryland' farming.
