Googong Township Integrated Water Cycle

About the project
CIC Australia (CIC) is planning the green fields township of Googong in Queanbeyan, to house some 15,700 people. Queanbeyan City Council (QCC) and CIC are working together on planning for an integrated water cycle (IWC) for Googong, centred on a membrane bio-reactor water recycling plant.
Project benefits
The IWC will include reticulated recycled water throughout the town, reducing potable water demand by at least 62% on an equivalent site without reticulated recycled water. Works will be in five stages, with two initial stages delivered within the funding timeframe of this program. These initial stages will provide immediate water saving benefits as well as a foundation for future savings in perpetuity.
Googong s IWC will significantly reduce potable water use through recycling (15,700 people using water traditionally supporting 5,970), whilst achieving social and environmental objectives, specifically:
- reduce water consumption through water conservation, recycling and rainwater use;
- improve runoff quality into the Queanbeyan River through; stormwater retention, rainwater use, Water Sensitive Urban Design;
- minimise wastewater discharge to the environment through substituting recycled water for household and urban irrigation use;
- demonstrate on a scale of 5,500 dwellings water efficient green fields residential development, whereby 2.6 persons use the water traditionally sustaining only 1; and
- create a township with a water efficiency culture.
