About the project
The project aims to reduce water losses and improve security in the supply of water to the Gunning township and the village of Dalton. This will be achieved by replacing the old water supply infrastructure with modern, efficient equipment that will even out water harvesting from the Lachlan River and minimise wastage. The work involves construction of an off river storage, a water treatment plant and an interconnecting pipeline.
Project benefits
The project will contribute water savings through the reduction in:
- demand due to installation and use of water efficient devices - 6ML per year; and
- water extraction due to efficiencies at new filtration plant - 8ML per year.
Water security will be enhanced by the above reductions and the construction of a new 100ML off river storage at Gunning Reservoir site. Additional enhancement to water security will also be achieved as the new filtration plant will be more able to manage the quality of treated water, which currently poses a threat to the reticulation and storage infrastructure due to the water quality being below standard for most parameters mentioned in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. By managing quality more closely those infrastructure assets will perform with less loss due to main breaks, equipment failures, leakage from reservoirs and excessive mains flushing.
