About the project
The objective of this project is to provide sustainable, secure and safe water supplies and wastewater services to the communities of Woorabinda and Wujal Wujal, and build capacity in a number of identified priority communities in Queensland.
The three sub-projects are:
- long term security of water supply for Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council
- long term security of water supply for Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council, and
- indigenous Communities Long Term Capacity Building and Sustainability Strategy Water and Wastewater Infrastructure.
Project benefits
The project will:
- ensure the long term security of water supply for the community of Woorabinda through the replacement of the pipeline and associated water storage facilities that transfers water from the Blackboy borefield to Woorabinda
- upgrade the long term security of water supply at the community of Wujal Wujal by replacing the pipeline from the water supply intake at the Bloomfield River. Associated work to improve the power supply and monitoring of the system will also be undertaken to improve the overall operational efficiency of the system
- implement a capacity and capability building program in high priority local communities throughout Queensland to ensure that current infrastructure and any future capital works programs are operated and appropriately maintained, future planning is undertaken, and high quality drinking water is delivered. The communities included in this program are Aurukun, Doomadgee, Hope Vale, Mornington Island, Wujal Wujal and Woorabinda.
Progress
The projects are scheduled to be completed by January 2014.
