Average prices of offers pursued from recent tenders

April 2012 Southern Murray-Darling Basin

The Targeted Water Purchase Initiative in the southern connected Murray-Darling Basin closed on 27 April 2012. It received strong interest from sellers with 782 conforming bids submitted to the select tender.

The average prices of offers pursued from this initiative, as well as previous initiatives, is reported below. These prices have been publicly released to provide greater transparency to the water purchasing program and to assist water entitlement owners who may be considering placing a sell offer in future purchasing initiatives.

As a result of this initiative, the Australian Government will be pursuing the purchase of 117 GL of permanent water entitlements in the southern connected Murray-Darling Basin. However, these purchases are subject to legal due diligence checks before a water sale contract will be issued. Therefore the volume purchased is subject to change. Full information on the volume of entitlements purchased from this initiative will be added to the department's website once they are secured by legally binding contracts.

The New South Wales Namoi and Queensland and New South Wales Border Rivers water purchase tender ran from 17 October to 11 November 2011. The table below contains the average price of offers pursued from the Queensland Border Rivers in this tender. No offers are being pursued from the New South Wales Border Rivers or Namoi catchments. This information has been publicly released to provide greater transparency to the tender process and to assist irrigators who may be considering placing a sell offer into future tenders in understanding recent market prices.

Queensland Lower Balonne tenders

November 2011 Queensland Lower Balonne tender

The Queensland Lower Balonne water purchase tender ran from 14 November to 9 December 2011. The average price of accepted offers in this tender have been publicly released to provide greater transparency to the tender process and to assist those who may be considering placing a sell offer into future tenders in understanding recent market prices.

It should be noted that each sell offer submitted to the tender was assessed individually with reference to the expected environmental outcomes from acquiring the entitlement offered, and the estimated market value of the entitlement. As a result, a unique price benchmark was calculated for each entitlement. A sell offer is accepted if the sell offer price is equal to, or less than, the price benchmark.
