Stormwater harvesting and reuse projects
In March 2009, the Government decided to enhance the scope of the National Urban Water and Desalination Plan by providing greater incentives for urban stormwater harvesting projects in order to reduce the demand on potable water supplies.
Subject to suitable proposals, the National Urban Water and Desalination Plan will provide a minimum of $200 million for stormwater harvesting and reuse projects.
Current Funding
The second Round of funding has been extended
- Stormwater harvesting and reuse projects - second round - closes 5pm EDT 10 February 2010
Round one outcomes
On Monday 2 November 2009 the Minister for Climate Change and Water announced $86.9 million for 13 projects from the first round of funding from the Special call for stormwater harvesting and reuse projects.
The combined water savings from these projects, located in Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, is estimated to be 4.6 gigalitres per annum. The projects will also reduce stormwater pollution in local waterways and will help to maintain parks, gardens and sportsgrounds, which have been hard hit by drought.
All successful and unsuccessful applicants will be advised in writing.
Program objectives
The objective of the program is to support stormwater harvesting and reuse projects in both large and small cities and towns that contribute to:
- Improving the security of water supplies in Australia, without adding to greenhouse gas emissions
- Reducing the demand on potable water supplies
- Helping to reduce the impact of urban runoff on water quality in receiving waters.
