Grey water re-use and demonstration sites
Forde, ACT and a second site
Total funding: $4.40 million with up to $2.00 million in contingency funding from the Australian Government plus GST and $2.2 million from Delfin Lend Lease.
About the project
The project will see Delfin Lend Lease integrate innovative domestic water reuse systems into new housing developments. The reuse system will be on each property and will separate household waste water into black and grey components. It will filter, store and re-use the grey water for sub-surface watering on each property as well as toilet flushing. Demonstration trials are planned for developments at Forde in the ACT and at a second site to be determined, subject to financial analysis. This project is an excellent demonstration of an innovative water recycling system that could be applied to new residential developments across the country. The Australian Government will provide funding to cover any possible costs of augmenting the sewage system and retrofitting if this becomes necessary.
Project benefits
The project will:
- demonstrate sustainable and efficient management of water resources in urban areas potable water demand is reduced by up to 80 per cent and sewage to be transported offsite is reduced by up to 70 per cent
- reduce watering demand by using sub-surface irrigation, and
- recycle stormwater, grey water and waste water and use this as a substitute for potable water.
- The project will advance the National Water Initiative objective of encouraging water sensitive urban development.
Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
