National
Funding: The Australian Government is investing $1.766 million (plus GST) in the project, with an additional $120,000 provided in funding and in-kind contributions from the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) and partners. The project also gains income from licence and application fees.
About the project

Products and services are assessed by an expert panel and awarded the Smart Approved WaterMark if found to contribute to water savings and water efficiency.
Project benefits
The project will:
- have the potential to achieve a net saving in outdoor water use of up to 25 per cent;
- provide a simple and identifiable label for products and services to allow them to differentiate themselves from competitors;
- recognise products and services that will contribute to a reduction in per capita water use and encourage further research and development;
- provide a simple and identifiable label for consumers so that they can make informed choices and in turn increase the rate of adoption of smart water technologies that reduce water consumption; and
- advance the National Water Initiative objective of increasing water use efficiency in domestic and commercial settings.
Progress
As at March 2011, 249 products and services have been awarded the Smart Approved WaterMark. The Technical Expert Panel undertakes application rounds for products and services four times year.
