Hunter and Gosford-Wyong regional water sharing project
Central Coast, NSW
Total funding: $43.84 million with funding of $6.61 million from the Australian Government, $8.63 million from the Hunter Water Corporation, $28.6 million from Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils.
About the project
The rapidly growing Hunter and Gosford-Wyong water supply systems serve a population of more than 800 000. The project, which is now completed, involved the construction of a pipeline between the two water supply areas capable of transferring 20 megalitres per day, to better utilise the assets of the water rich Hunter system and the large storage capacity of the Gosford-Wyong system.
Project benefits
The project has:
- improved the security of water supply and increased the overall system yield for the Hunter and Gosford-Wyong systems
- developed a model for inter-regional water trading and water banking where excess water is stored, or banked for later use through partnership arrangements, and
- demonstrated the benefits of cooperative arrangements between neighbouring water utilities.
The project has advanced the National Water Initiative objectives of facilitating water trading and securing reliable urban water supplies.
Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
