Emergency Wingecarribee to Goulburn Pipeline
Goulburn Mulwaree Council (the Council), NSW
Total funding: Estimated at $54 million, with $20 million from the Australian Government and $20 million from the New South Wales (NSW) Government. The Goulburn Mulwaree Council will contribute funding to cover any additional costs of the project.
About the project
The emergency pipeline will link the Goulburn water supply system to the Wingecarribee Reservoir near Moss Vale in New South Wales. The pipeline is approximately 88 kilometres long and will be capable of supplying the Goulburn community with up to 7.3 million litres of water per day during drought periods. Two en-route pump stations will be required at Wingecarribee and Marulan.
The Australian Government funding is contingent upon:
- the New South Wales Government contributing $20 million and the Council contributing the balance.
- Council completing an integrated water cycle management plan to the satisfaction of the NSW government. The plan must identify a long term water supply solution for Goulburn.
Project benefits
The project will:
- provide an emergency source of water for Goulburn that will increase the security of Goulburn's water supply during drought periods, and
- provide relief to the residents of Goulburn who have been on level five water restrictions for almost three years.
The project will advance the National Water Initiative outcomes of providing healthy, safe and reliable water supplies and facilitating water trading between and within the urban and rural sectors.
Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
