About the project component
Hawkesbury City Council owns and operates two sewage treatment plants in the South Creek sub-catchment, one at McGraths Hill and one at South Windsor. The South Windsor sewage treatment plant has only minimal on-site reuse of treated effluent. Approximately 1400ML per annum of treated effluent is discharged from the South Windsor sewage treatment plant to South Creek, which then flows to the Hawkesbury River at Windsor.
The Hawkesbury Nepean River Recovery Project - Hawkesbury Council South Windsor Effluent Reuse Scheme Project Component will:
- construct a recycled sewage treatment plant at the existing South Windsor sewage treatment plant, including a chlorination system to provide increased disinfection to address potential health risks and to provide flexibility in the range of potential uses for the recycled water
- construct a distribution system to supply recycled water to Council Reserves (14 hectares) and schools (6 hectares) in South Windsor and Bligh Park for irrigation.
Project benefits
The Project Component will seek to:
- replace 100 megalitres per year of potable water use for open space irrigation with treated effluent from the South Windsor sewage treatment plant
- reduce nutrient load discharged to the Hawkesbury River system from South Windsor Sewage Treatment Plant
- increase social benefits realised through improved player surface and quality of open space areas in South Windsor and Bligh Park.
