Smart metering and sustainable water pricing initiative

Hervey Bay, Queensland

Download

Total funding: $6.03 million with funding of $2.60 million from the Australian Government, $2.5 million from Wide Bay Water and $930,000 from the Queensland Government.

About the project

The project has involved the installation of a system that allows water meters on residential properties across the Hervey Bay water supply network to be read remotely. This will allow for introduction of a time of use billing system to encourage customers to use water in off-peak times. Water use at night will be billed at a cheaper rate than during the day. Smart metering also allows for the diagnosis of different types of water leaks.

This is a significant innovation in urban water management. The innovative approach and the demonstration benefits of the project will be widely communicated.

Water for the Future

Water for the Future is a long term plan to secure the water supply of all Australians. The Australian Government is investing in a range of programs over 10 years to address four key priorities; taking action on climate change, using water wisely, securing water supplies and healthy rivers and waterways.
