About the project
The Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme saves water by providing purified recycled water from Brisbane Waste Water Treatment Plants to replace potable supplies used in power stations and industry. It is the largest recycled water scheme in the southern hemisphere. This scheme can also augment water supplies in Wivenhoe Dam.
Project benefits
The project has the potential to provide 232 megalitres of purified recycled water per day. The project is currently providing water to power stations in the region and plans are underway to expand this supply to other industries.
The project demonstrates a large scale best practice water recycling operation that produces purified recycled water that could augment the drinking water supply.
The project contributes to achieving the National Water Initiative outcome of encouraging the re-use and recycling of waste water.
Progress
Practical completion of this project was achieved in December 2008. The final progress report - Western Corridor Project: Stage 2 is now available.
