Groundwater management: integrated water resource management in the South East of South Australia

South East of South Australia

Total funding: $12.63 million with $6.25 million plus GST from the Australian Government and $6.38 million from the South Australian Government.

About the project

This project will improve the management of groundwater resources across the South East of South Australia through improved groundwater resource assessments, monitoring and accounting across the region, support for an integrated regional resource management approach and implementation of best practices in irrigation management to meet groundwater targets. It will also further the South Australian initiative to establish volumetric allocations in the South East through the installation of telemetry systems, and use the data to inform groundwater management in the region.

Project benefits

The project will:

This project will assist the South Australian Government to meet its groundwater assessment objectives under the National Water Initiative.

This project delivers on the Australian Governments commitment to improve water management as outlined in South Australia A More Sustainable Future at the last election.

Progress to June 2008

Several studies have commenced including modelling to estimate the replenishment of aquifers by rainfall; sampling to determine the spatial and temporal variability of flows to key groundwater dependent ecosystems; a trial to test telemetry and data management options for the remote reading of irrigation water meters; and the investigation of adaptive water management options for the region.

Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's framework, Water for the Future.
