Environmental Water Trading System
Berri, South Australia
Australian Government Funding: $705,000
About the project
This project established a web-based environmental water trading system and mechanisms to facilitate water donations to approved environmental projects on the Murray River in South Australia.
Under the project, the donation of water for environmental purposes was undertaken within the Environmental Water Trust's framework established by the South Australian Government. This framework includes incentives such as the removal of transaction fees, environmental levy refunds and exemption of transactions from stamp duty for donated water. The WEF is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the health of Australian river systems.
Project benefits
The project has:
- enabled underutilised water allocations to be directed to worthy environmental projects,
- provided a cost effective and flexible method of recovery of water to achieve environmental outcomes, through donated water entitlements, and
- provided for real-time online water donations through a web-based platform with effective, monitoring, reporting and accounting for environmental water use.
Progress
This project is now complete. The web based trading system is now operational and the project has received its first water donation, financial donation and corporate sponsorship despite the ongoing drought in the Murray Darling Basin.
