Statewide wastewater recycling project
Regional South Australia
Total funding: $200 million with funding from the Australian Government of $20 million and funding from local governments of $180 million.
About the project
Commonwealth funding will help a number of local councils with the capital costs of upgrading up to 63 existing community wastewater management systems in South Australia. It is anticipated that up to 8,843 ML per annum of recycled water will be made available as a result of the project.
Project benefits
The project will:
- address groundwater and surface water contamination and other environmental impacts of ageing community wastewater management systems
- supplement existing water supplies through increased recycling of reclaimed wastewater, and
- improve the environmental, operational and financial sustainability of community wastewater management systems.
The project will advance the National Water Initiative by encouraging reuse and recycling of wastewater where this is cost effective.
Progress
Of the 63 schemes which form the project all but 14 are now complete with the remaining schemes nearing completion and on track to be finalised by December 2010.
Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
