Tasmania - Water planning project
Tasmania
Better information for better outcomes - enhancing water planning in Tasmania
Total funding: $3.19 million with a contribution of $2.27 million (plus GST) from the Australian Government over two years and $690 000 from the Tasmanian Government.
About the project
The project will develop comprehensive scientific information on ground water and surface water resources across the State.
Models to be developed under the project are:
- Hydrological models for 54 agricultural catchments. This will complement an Australian Government National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality project to develop models for 15 rural catchments. Together the total 69 catchments cover approximately 54 per cent of Tasmanias water resources.
- Surface-groundwater models in up to 20 selected catchments already under some level of stress or with high potential to become stressed.
Another important aspect of the project will help to identify the values of important aquatic ecosystems through refinement of Tasmanias recently developed Conservation of Freshwater Ecosystem Value (CFEV) database.
Project benefits
The project will:
- provide more accurate information that allows managers and communities to make informed water planning decisions as envisaged under the National Water Initiative
- report on and monitor catchment conditions, and
- increase the availability of scientifically robust data to conserve critical freshwater ecosystems.
The project advances the National Water Initiative objective of water planning.
Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
