Restoring unregulated rivers - establishing sustainable management of water allocations in unregulated rivers across Victoria
Victoria
Total funding: $15.64 million with $7.82 million (plus GST) from the Australian Government and $7.82 million (plus GST) from the Victorian Government.
About the project
- measures to implement SFMPs such as off-stream storages with urban water authorities (WSA $2.5m) and market based incentive schemes with irrigators to shift water extraction from the stressed summer period to the winter months
- innovative metering and monitoring technology in priority SFMP areas using data loggers with remote sensing technology, and
- a communication action plan.
Project Outcomes and Benefits
The project aims to provide an improved level of management of Victoria's unregulated rivers and improve stream flows over the summer period with a reduction of flow related stress in the critical summer period. Outcomes include enhancing the environmental water reserve in priority stressed unregulated rivers and streams while maintaining the reliability of supply of water users.
The project advances the National Water Initiative objective of knowledge and capacity building.
Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
