Goldfields Superpipe to Bendigo and Ballarat
Bendigo and Ballarat, Victoria
Australian Government Funding: $89,500,000
About the project
The project involved construction of a 45 kilometre pipeline that links the Bendigo water supply system to the Goulburn River System and construction of an 87 kilometre pipeline from Bendigo to Ballarat.
The project also provided for the supply of up to 38 gigalitres of water per year purchased from willing sellers in the Goulburn system to augment drinking water supplies.
The project responded to a significant urban water challenge in the Bendigo and Ballarat regions due to continuing low flow conditions in the local catchments.
Project benefits
The project:
- provides Bendigo and Ballarat with an alternative and more reliable supply of water by providing access to the much larger catchment of the Goulburn River including Lake Eildon
- advances the National Water Initiative objective of broadening water trading, including between urban and rural sectors.
Progress
