Restoration of Groundwater Aquifer on the Cottesloe Peninsula
Cottesloe, WA
Australian Government Funding: $782,000
About the project
The project delivered filtered storm water to replenish the Cottesloe groundwater aquifer. It involved removing ten storm water outfalls to the coastal ocean and installation of subsurface storm water capture and filtration system. Storm water then replenishes the aquifer through 280 roadside soak pits. In addition to these measures, a public education program was delivered to reduce private groundwater use, decrease the installation of new private bores and reduce storm water pollutants.
Project benefits
The project has:
- reduced the risk of aquifer collapse and seawater intrusion
- minimised pollutants entering the aquifer by cleaning raw storm water
- achieved more sustainable household and garden water consumption through reuse of storm water
- achieved environmental benefits by removing an estimated 180 Megalitres per year of storm water ocean outfalls
- assisted in a better community understanding of local water resource management use
- promoted water efficient technology.
Progress
The project is now complete and the final report is available below:
