Restoration of groundwater aquifer on the Cottesloe Peninsula
Cottesloe, WA
Total funding: $2.35 million with a contribution of $782, 000 from the Australian Government and $1.56 million from the Town of Cottesloe.
About the project
The project delivered filtered stormwater to replenish the Cottesloe groundwater aquifer. It involved removing ten stormwater outfalls to the coastal ocean and installation of subsurface stormwater capture and filtration system. Stormwater then replenishes the aquifer through 280 roadside soak pits. In addition to these measures, a public education program was delivered to reduce private groundwater use, decrease the installation of new private bores and reduce stormwater pollutants.
The project was a direct partnership between the Australian Government and the Town of Cottesloe. The final report for the project is attached here:
Project benefits
The project has:
- reduced the risk of aquifer collapse and seawater intrusion;
- minimised pollutants entering the aquifer by cleaning raw stormwater;
- achieved more sustainable household and garden water consumption through reuse of stormwater;
- achieved environmental benefits by removing an estimated 180 Megalitres per year of stormwater ocean outfalls;
- assisted in a better community understanding of local water resource management and use; and
- romoted water efficient technology.
The project has advanced the National Water Initiative objective of encouraging innovation in water supply.
Progress to date
The project is complete.
