Water Planning in Western Australia

Western Australia

Australian Government Funding: $13,381,029

About the project

The project accelerated statutory water planning for four of the highest priority water systems in Western Australia: the Pilbara, the Gnangara Mound, the South West and the Collie Catchment.

Water planning for the Pilbara, a region which is experiencing a natural resources boom, has determined the level of sustainable and reliable water resources available for extraction, and appropriate management strategies for the water resources.

Water planning for the Gnangara mound, a system which supplies approximately 70 per cent of Perth's water supply and supports a lucrative agricultural industry, has determined the sustainable extraction limit, the current extraction limit and aims to return the system to sustainable levels of use.

For the South West, the project involved building upon extensive work already undertaken by the Western Australia government to investigate water allocation options for the south west region, which is under increasing pressure from communities, industry and horticulture.

The Collie Catchment is also under increasing pressure from communities, industry and horticulture, and is a major mining and electricity generating region. Water planning for the catchment has enabled future sustainable water allocation including the management of salt encroachment in the region.

Project outcomes and benefits

The project developed water management plans, establishing sustainable surface and groundwater extraction limits and, ensuring that the environment is provided for as required by the National Water Initiative.

Water Smart Australia projects are funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
