European discovery of groundwater in the Great Artesian Basin came in 1878 when a shallow bore sunk near Bourke in NSW produced flowing water. By 1915 over 1500 free-flowing artesian bores had been drilled through the basin and thousands of kilometers of open bore drains were dug to carry stock water across properties.

In those days, lack of knowledge about the finite nature of the resource, along with the unavailability of modern technologies, led to considerable water wastage and eventually to a decrease in water pressure.

This segment explains rehabilitation work which is occurring under the Great Artesian Basin Sustainability Initiative (GABSI) Capping and Piping Program, which aims to conserve and improve distribution of this natural resource, restore water pressure in the basin and to provide a positive impact on the environment and economic future of the resource and the community it serves.

'Water Down Under' DVD - The Great Artesian Basin Story

Stretching from Cape York in the north, down to Dubbo and across to Coober Pedy, the Great Artesian Basin covers almost a quarter of the Australian continent, and contains enough water to cover the world over. Much remains to be known about this valuable resource that has enabled life in inland Australian to develop over thousands of years.

Water Down Under is the vast and rich story of the Basin, told by the people who live on the Basin itself, and presented by National Geographic's Hayden Turner.
