Introduction

This document provides background information and sets out specifications for mapping Australian Ramsar wetlands. The specifications have been developed by the Wetlands and Waterbirds Taskforce. The Taskforce is convened under the umbrella of the Natural Resource Management Standing Committee which supports the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council. The Wetlands and Waterbirds Taskforce is responsible for advising the High Conservation Value Aquatic Ecosystems Taskgroup and Natural Resource Policies and Programs Committee on the implementation of the Ramsar Convention. The Taskforce consists of wetlands experts from the relevant Commonwealth, State and Territory agencies.

The specifications are intended for application at Ramsar wetlands in Australia. They outline the standards for delineation of boundaries, data capture and management and map production for Ramsar wetlands. They are intended to provide guidance to managers of Ramsar wetlands and agencies that have a role in the preparation and approval of documentation for Ramsar wetlands.

The Wetlands and Waterbirds Taskforce is preparing Australian National Guidelines for Ramsar Wetlands – Implementing the Ramsar Convention in Australia. These specifications form part of the national guidelines. Guidelines on other aspects of Ramsar wetland nomination and management are in preparation. The specifications were endorsed by the Natural Resource Management Standing Committee on 20 October 2006. They will be reviewed by the Taskforce no later than October 2011.
