The Australian Government has granted $861,500 in funding to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust for its Sydney Harbour Green Precincts project.
The Sydney Harbour Green Precincts project is one of a number of high-profile demonstration projects to be undertaken with funding from the Green Precincts Fund.
The project aims to harvest enough rainwater to replace 100 per cent of its non-potable water needs, and generate 20 per cent of the electricity needs through the construction of two solar energy farms.
Stationed across two spectacular public places, North Head and Cockatoo Island, a unique highlight of this project will be the integration of heritage-listed buildings to showcase energy and water saving technologies.
Key initiatives of the project include the:
- capture of rainwater for use in toilets and irrigation, refurbishment of existing water storage infrastructure and installation of new water tanks to enable storage of at least 2 million litres of rainwater
- installation of multiple arrays of solar photovoltaic panels to generate the energy needs of buildings on both sites
- installation of energy and water efficiency devices inside buildings using best available Australian Standard products, and
- introduction of solar-powered pumps to transfer rainwater from tanks to building facilities.
Through these high-profile sites, which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, the Sydney Harbour Green Precincts will inspire and educate the community to take action in their own homes and workplaces to save water and energy.
Both sites host large events and are popular as venues for public and private functions.
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust's objective is to open up unique Sydney Harbour sites to the public and to conserve the natural and cultural heritage values of these sites.
The water and energy efficiency measures of the project will considerably enhance this with a more comprehensive ecological vision.
The Green Precincts Fund is an Australian Government initiative to prepare Australia for a future with less water and to encourage local communities to better manage their water and energy use for current and future generations.
