The Australian Government has granted funding to the City of Onkaparinga, South Australia for their Woodcroft Green Precinct project.
The project will create an iconic green hub in southern Adelaide, incorporating best practice design features and innovative technology to showcase the benefits of sustainable living.
The Woodcroft Green Precinct project is one of a number of high-profile demonstration projects to be undertaken with funding from the Green Precincts Fund.
Key initiatives of the Woodcroft Green Precinct project include:
- installing solar power - including 10kW capacity photovoltaic panels, solar power grid connected car park lighting and a solar thermal hot water system
- installing water-use metering and sub-metering, and replacing all taps, cisterns and urinals with 6-star WELS rated fittings
- a more energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning system
- installing a building management system and room sensors that automatically switch the lights off when not required
- a rainwater and stormwater harvesting system for reticulation that aims to meet 100 per cent of the buildings' non-potable water requirements and provide a surplus of water.
Through these measures, the City of Onkaparinga expects energy use to be reduced by 65 per cent and the rainwater and stormwater harvesting system aims to capture a surplus of water of around 400,000 litres a year to be shared with the neighbouring Woodcroft College.
As a busy community hub, the Woodcroft precinct's sustainability message will reach more than 300,000 visitors, local residents, school students and local businesses.
The precinct will be the development benchmark for southern Adelaide. The Woodcroft Library and Neighbourhood Centre will be the flagship of the City of Onkaparinga's Green Hubs.
Annual savings
Water: 952,000L Energy: 145,774 kWh CO2 emissions: 122 tonnes
L = Litres kWh = kilowatt hours
The Council's Green Hubs provide working examples of low impact lifestyle and design choices.
The Green Precincts Fund is an Australian Government initiative to prepare Australia for a future with less water and to encourage local communities to better manage their water and energy use for current and future generations.
