The Grove: Leading, Learning, Living is a collaboration between the Town of Cottesloe, the Shire of Peppermint Grove and the Town of Mosman Park. It involved the development of a ‘Green Precincts’ demonstration site, hereafter referred to as The Grove, on the corner of Leake Street and Stirling Highway Cottesloe. The Grove co-locates a new library, community learning centre and administration centre for the Shire of Peppermint Grove.
The objectives of the project were to:
- create a showcase green precinct
- significantly reduce energy and water use onsite and subsequently reduce carbon emissions
- demonstrate these measures to the community and communicate the results to encourage uptake by the community
- increase demand from the community for products and projects that reduce energy and water consumption.
These objectives relate to two core areas: 1) Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD); and, 2) Community Education and Engagement.
The Grove was completed in December 2010. The ESD components of the total contract were costed at around $3.6 million and were supported by a $1.5 million grant from the Australian Government’s Green Precincts program. The three local governments shared the remainder of the costs.
This document tells the story of The Grove’s innovative design, the sustainability and educational benefits and outcomes. Lessons learnt are also highlighted along with information about what’s next and how you can be involved.
