Sassafras-Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme


On 21 September 2015, responsibility for water policy and resources was transferred to the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources - Administrative Arrangement Order made on 21 September 2015.

Project completed December 2011

Total funding: $12.3 million, with $3.7 million from the Australian Government, $2.0 million from the Tasmanian Government and the remainder from private contributions.

About the project

The Sassafras-Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme supplies up to 5,460 ML of water sourced from the Mersey River via 74 kilometres of pipes to irrigators within the Sassafras Wesley Vale region of northern Tasmania. The scheme services about 120 farms covering more than 10,000 hectares stretching from east of Devonport almost to Port Sorell and south of the Bass Highway east of Latrobe.

The project has been managed by Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd, which is a Tasmanian Government owned company. More information is available on the Tasmanian Irrigation website.
