The Murray-Darling Basin is a vital part of Australia’s environment and industry. It covers more than one million square kilometres, is home to over two million people, produces close to two thirds of our national irrigation production, and has many important wetland ecosystems.
Agriculture is the backbone of the Basin. It employs around 90,000 people and produces high quality food and fibre for Australians and for export around the world. But the viability of this sector is threatened by unsustainable levels of water use which are causing environmental problems to accumulate in the Basin.
Moving to a sustainable level of water use will benefit both our environmental and our agricultural industries.
Most local stories highlight how Australian Government funded Water for the Future projects are helping Basin communities prepare for the changing climate and varied water supplies but also contributing to a healthy working Basin.
These local stories also highlight some of our projects outside the Basin.
