Mangrove Meander: Celebrating World Wetlands Day 2012

Activities Enjoy a gentle guided 3 km walk through the mangroves along the Tabbil-ban Dhagun Boardwalk at Nudgee Beach Reserve to celebrate World Wetlands Day 2012. Enjoy the fresh air and learn more about the functions of wetlands, the presence of migratory shorebirds in Moreton Bay and find out why mangroves are such an important wetland area.

Discovery Stall - World Wetlands Week 2012: Celebrating World Wetlands Day

Activities

Brisbane City Council's Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre staff will host an information stall in the Queen Street Mall to raise awareness of World Wetlands Week, celebrating annual World Wetlands Day on 2 February.

Come along and discover the importance of our local wetlands as habitat for thousands of animal and plant species, including up to 50 000 migratory shorebirds visiting Moreton Bay each year.

View shorebird and wetlands displays, meet our shorebird mascot "Ellie", the Eastern Curlew, and enjoy traditional Kamishibai storytelling in honour of our friends and colleagues at our 'sister wetlands' at Yatsu-Higata tidelands, Narashino City, Japan. Drop in for a chat with our friendly Education Officers to find out about free World Wetlands Week activities and school holiday programs at our two Environment Centres.

Sandgate World Wetlands Week activities: Celebrating World Wetlands Day 2012

Activities

Brisbane City Council's Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre will host an afternoon of free activities, information and displays on the Sandgate foreshore to mark the end of World Wetlands Week celebrations for World Wetlands Day, held annually on 2 February.

Come along and discover the importance of our local wetlands as habitat for thousands of animal and plant species, including up to 50 000 migratory shorebirds visiting Moreton Bay each year.

Meet our shorebird mascot "Ellie", the Eastern Curlew, take part in some free art activities for all ages, view the interactive Sharing Shorelines display about the migratory shorebirds of Moreton Bay, and have a go at shorebird spotting at low tide. Drop in for a chat with our friendly Education Officers to learn more about the importance of wetlands, and for information about other free school holiday programs at Council's two Environment Centres.

Close to Sandgate is Boondall Wetlands Reserve -Brisbane's largest protected wetland and part of Moreton Bay, an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention. So come along and find out how you can help preserve our wonderful wetlands.

World Wetlands Day - Tingalpa Wetlands

Activities To celebrate World Wetlands Day help us plant 240 native plants as a wetland buffer at the site. You can also view a wetlands display, listen to informative and inspiring talks about wetlands and why they are important and come along to a guided walk of the project sites Tingalpa Wetlands, Landcare site, Hemmant-Tingalpa Rd Reserve. Free morning tea is provided.

Further information Tingalpa Wetlands is a freshwater Melaleuca wetland system, a threatened ecosystem in South East Queensland. The original project area was 30 hectares including two billabongs and extensive shallow wetlands and parkland buffers. B4C and Brisbane City Council have worked together since 1997 to rehabilitate and support a regionally significant environmental corridor (Koala Coast to Brisbane River).
