World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971.

World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997. Since then government agencies, non-government organisations and community groups have celebrated World Wetlands Day by undertaking actions to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits and promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands. These activities include seminars, nature walks, festivals, launches of new policies, announcement of new Ramsar sites, newspaper articles, radio interviews and wetland rehabilitation.

World Wetlands Day 2015

The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2015 is Wetlands for Our Future.

Wetlands offer substantial economic, social and environmental values which, if managed sustainably, will provide benefits to future generations. Raising awareness and understanding of wetland values and services is essential for ensuring their wise use and conservation.

The Ramsar Convention Secretariat has developed a number of downloadable World Wetlands Day materials for 2015, including a teaching guide, handouts, posters and fact sheets. These materials can be found on the Ramsar Convention Secretariat’s World Wetlands Day 2015 website. Groups and individuals are encouraged to adapt these materials for their own World Wetlands Day events and activities.

To celebrate World Wetlands Day, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat is also running a photographic competition for 15-24 year olds. The winner will receive a free flight to a famous wetland of their choice anywhere in the world. To enter, take a picture of your favourite wetland with your phone or digital camera between 2 February and 2 March 2015, and upload it to the Ramsar Convention Secretariat’s World Wetlands Day 2015 website.

Calendar of events
