About the Management Plan

This Wildlife Trade Management Plan has been developed by the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment for common brushtail possums. This management plan covers the commercial harvest of common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) within Tasmania and where the term 'possum' is used within this document it refers to this species.

In Australia the export of possum products requires Australian Government approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The plan has been developed to satisfy the requirements of this Act and to meet the legislative and other requirements of the Tasmanian Government.

This management plan is current for a maximum five-year period from 01 July 2015 to 30 June 2020. The Declaration of an Approved Wildlife Trade Management Plan for common brushtail possums in Tasmania states that the Minister for the Environment has approved this management plan.

The minister's approval was subject to annual reporting to the Department.
