Aerial surveys commenced in 1978 and have been undertaken annually by Grigg and co-workers under contract to SADENR. The survey area is approximately 240,000 square km and the sampling intensity approximately 1.5%.
Since 1995, the population estimates (thin line, open symbols) have included an estimate of numbers outside the aerial survey area. For western grey kangaroos, population size has been calculated from a revised correction factor (increased by a factor of 2) for aerial survey estimates.
