National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy

A refreshed strategy in 2021

The Australian Government is refreshing the National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy. We will release the new strategy in the second half of 2021.

Climate adaptation is a shared responsibility. We will be consulting widely to develop the new strategy.

The 2015 strategy

The first strategy, released in 2015:

  • set out how Australia is managing the risks of a variable and changing climate
  • identified a set of principles to guide effective adaptation practice and resilience building
  • outlined the government’s vision for a climate-resilient future.

The strategy also looked at a wide range of adaptation and resilience initiatives across key sectors:

  • coasts
  • cities and the built environment
  • agriculture, forestry and fisheries
  • water resources
  • natural ecosystems
  • health and wellbeing
  • disaster risk management
  • a resilient and secure region

Roles and responsibilities

The Strategy notes the roles and responsibilities for climate change adaptation in Australia. These were agreed by the then Select Council on Climate Change in 2012. The council comprised ministers from the Australian, state and territory governments.
