Draft wildlife trade management plan: South Australian Commercial Kangaroo Management Plan 2018–2022

Comments invited
Commercial exports may be permitted for specimens of native wildlife taken in accordance with the provisions of an approved wildlife trade management plan. The draft South Australian Commercial Kangaroo Management Plan 2018–2022 has been prepared by the South Australian Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources for consideration as an approved wildlife trade management plan under section 303FO of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Should the plan be approved, it is proposed that it will be in force for five (5) years from the date of its declaration.
In accordance with the provisions of section 303FR of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposed management plan. The Minister must consider public comments when deciding whether to approve a wildlife trade management plan.

About the draft management plan
The primary goal of the draft plan is to ensure an ecologically sustainable harvest of kangaroos and to provide an alternative management option for reducing the damage caused by overabundant kangaroos. This will be achieved through the application of the best available scientific knowledge, best practice management and monitoring of outcomes to ensure that the viability of kangaroo populations is not compromised by any action taken under this plan.
This plan relates only to the commercial harvest of red kangaroos (Macropus rufus), western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) and euros (Macropus robustus).
In accordance with the provisions of section 303FR of the Act, you are invited to comment on the proposed management plan. Please submit your written comments by 29 September 2017.
To assist the Minister in considering comments, the Department of the Environment and Energy encourages you to provide comments under the following headings:
- Sustainability of the harvesting regime
- Survey and monitoring practices
- Quota setting regime
- Licensing regime
- Animal welfare
- Other
