The Department's Technology and Information Strategy 2019-2023 outlines the strategic direction for the Department’s investment in technology and information over four financial years.
The strategy contributes to all eight of the priority capabilities identified in the Department’s Corporate Plan 2018-19. In particular, the strategy addresses the "Improving our technology and digital capabilities" priority.
Strategic investment in technology and information will support the Department in advising on and implementing environment and energy policy, programs and regulation. This supports the Government in achieving a healthy environment, strong economy and thriving community now and for the future.
In addition to the Department’s internal needs, the strategy was informed by a range of external drivers. These include: changes in technology, such as the evolution of cloud services; guidance from the Digital Transformation Agency, which focuses on how technology can be used to improve people’s experience of government services; and the Digital Continuity 2020 Policy published by the National Archives of Australia, which identifies digital information management principles and practices.
The strategy includes the following key goals:
- Information at the core - Maximise the value of data to inform decisions.
- Lights on - Continuity of services as we build the foundations of the future.
- Mobility and collaboration - Simple ways to partner and collaborate.
- Flexible - Rapidly transform and reuse technology and information at minimal cost.
- Fit for purpose - Support business needs with contemporary and easy to use technology and information solutions.
- Environment - Reduce the Department's environmental footprint.
- Secure - Secure systems and information with the right access at the right time.
In developing the strategy, the Department undertook significant work to identify strategic direction across a range of areas. These included information management, business applications, cloud services, service integration and cyber security. As part of this work, the Department has developed a Cloud Strategy.
Cloud Strategy
The Cloud Strategy drives the Department’s adoption of cloud computing services. It includes guiding principles to shape decisions about the hosting of information and communication technology (ICT) services that directly support the business objectives of the Department.
