Wetlands Australia 33: National wetlands update February 2021

Introduction
2021 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in Ramsar, Iran, 2 February 1971.
The theme for World Wetlands Day 2021 and the Ramsar 50th anniversary is “Wetlands and Water’ which highlights the important role of wetlands in providing freshwater and a range of ecological services to benefit people and nature.
Wetlands are important for many reasons, ranging from water supply, clean water, biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, storm protection, carbon storage, Indigenous culture, health and wellbeing, to food production, recreation and livelihoods.
The 33rd edition of Wetlands Australia reflects this theme and focuses on engagement, education or research activities that are undertaken at our Ramsar sites or at local wetlands. The aim is to share the good work that is being done to value and protect wetlands.
We hope this edition of Wetlands Australia inspires you to value and conserve the biodiversity of Australia’s amazing wetlands.
